Taylor Swift’s just-released sixth studio album Reputation sucks because its representative of the worst case scenario of what happens when white Caucasian female pop ingenues use specifically black music and black culture as the influence and soundtrack of their career-as-life redemption stories. This was a tale that started with Madonna’s best case scenario, weaves its way through Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus’ bittersweetly ham-handed attempts at appropriating similar salvation, and lands with a thud with Reputation attempting some type of religulous wading in the well of holy water of black music and culture for deliverance. Unfortunately, for the thirsting for redemption Ms. Swift, that well has run dry.
