Given our current sociopolitical climate, 2008 feels like approximately ten million years ago. Here, from my long deceased blog, True Genius Requires Insanity, is a list that will hopefully “save your soul” and provide a “flashing light” of inspiration from a time when “American Boy”s weren’t all potential #MeToo candidates.
10. Who’s Gonna Save my Soul — Gnarls Barkley
This song is three minutes of moody and evocative brilliance. Gnarls Barkley’s bizarre sound and erring towards haute couture make the tandem the dissonant “Talking Heads of R & B.” However, once entranced by their aesthetic, you’re likely to be bowled over by their musical craftsmanship. Here, Cee-Lo Green and Dangermouse ruminate on hopelessness in a hopeless world, and it feels like you’ll hear nothing better all year.
