Ladies and gentlemen / It’s my pleasure to introduce to you
He’s a friend of mine / Yes, yes I am
And he goes by the name… / Justin
Wowoowoooo
All the way / From Memphis, Tennessee
And he’s got somethin’ special for y’all tonight
— Pharrell Williams, from the opening of Justin Timberlake’s 2003 single “Senorita”

Given that Americans are over-triggered and under-rested, it’s completely understandable that we forgot that in 2003, Pharrell Williams — a black man who’s an infinitely gifted musician in the urban soul tradition — cosigned via the album Justified that Justin Timberlake was forever okay to engage in the propagation of unfiltered, un-gentrified, unaffiliated with white privilege, non-appropriated, and non co-opted black and/or soul music.
